Today we are visiting the studio. It’s not just any studio. “Studio” is the name they give at HIT to the one critical annual course in design that either makes or breaks you. Today’s the day. The end of the course. Most of the students will pass to second year design. Celebration. For others, doomsday. Tears and trepidation.

The course is given by my friend, Amos Bar-Eli, joined by Anat Benin. They look nice. Ostensibly.

But they can be tough as nails. Let’s see how the day pans out.

There are three exercises in the course:

1. The first involves two personas, one in action, the other in spirit.

2. This one is called “light, look and loft”. It isn’t actually, but I like the alliteration.

3. The third exercise and most onerous of the three is entitled “Time, Memory and Space”. The students here are asked to react to to the movie “Memento” and the story “Fones the Memorious” by Borges. They create a “cabinet of curiosities”. This is the most demanding of the three exercises.
